Alfred Schirmer
March 12, 2002
Alfred N. Schirmer, 88, formerly of Pine Grove Manor, died yesterday at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colo., where he had resided for more than a year.
Born in London on Oct. 29, 1913, son of Alfred N. Schirmer Sr. and Gretchen Persson Schirmer, his family moved to New Jersey in 1927. He moved to Middlefield and Dalton in 1985 to be closer to his son's family.
Mr. Schirmer trained as an aircraft engine mechanic and worked on military planes throughout World War II with the Air Force. He was brought in to replace the engine cylinders on the plane Howard Hughes used for his round-the-world trip. After the war, he worked for Lockheed Martin Corp., moving around the states and settling in Marietta, Ga., where he remained until his retirement in 1976, with 27 years of service.
He was a member of the Council of Aging in Hinsdale and Middlefield, and was one of the original tenants of Pine Grove Manor. He enjoyed walking and, in 1987, had walked 27 miles form Dalton to Huntington, four years after quadruple bypass surgery. He also enjoyed gardening.
His wife, Rose Schirmer, died in 1981.
He leaves a son, Paul Schirmer of Durango; a sister, Inger Gistedt of Denham Springs, La., and a granddaughter.
