Rudolph J. Dassat

Rudolph J. Dassat, 88, of 81 Howard St. died yesterday at home.

Born in Readsboro, Vt., on Jan. 24, 1914, son of Emilio and Anna Cengia Dassat, he attended schools there and moved to Pittsfield in 1926.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was wounded in France and in Germany and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and several other decorations. He participated in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European campaigns.

Mr. Dassat was employed by GE in the power transformer department in Building 100 for 30 years, retiring in 1977 as group leader. He was first employed as a route delivery man for nine years by the former Model Dairy, and later by the former Capitol Furniture Store on North Street

A communicant of Mount Carmel Church, he was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 and American Legion Post 155 of Dalton. He was past commander of the Massachusetts State Guard Veterans Cahill-Champoux Memorial Unit of Pittsfield and a past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 358.

He was a member of the North Adams Eagles Aerie 310 and a life member of Grand National Aerie of Eagles. In 1946, he served as commander of the Father William J. Contino Post of Pittsfield. He volunteered for many years decorating veterans' graves with American flags for Memorial Day.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing pitch.

He and his wife, the former Rose E. Quadrozzi, were married Sept. 23, 1939, in Mount Carmel Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert J. Dassat of Dalton and William P. Dassat of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.

The funeral with full military honors will be Wednesday, March 13, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. John H. Ford, CSS. Burial will take place in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, March 12, from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
