John Moriarty Jr.

John M. Moriarty Jr., 63, of 47 Lake St., Gardner, died yesterday at Heywood Hospital in Gardner after a long illness. He was the father of Amy Cote of Pittsfield.

Born in Gardner on June 14, 1938, son of John M. and Jennie C. Zyzniewski Moriarty, he lived in Winchendon most of his life before moving to Gardner in 1999. He was a 1956 graduate of Murdock High School in Winchendon. After high school, he served three years in the Navy. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Saunders Electronics School in Boston.

He was employed in the application engineering department at Simplex in Gardner for more than 30 years, retiring in 1995.

Mr. Moriarty was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Winchendon and sang in the church choir for many years. An enthusiastic golfer, he also enjoyed hiking and music. He was a former corporator for the former Winchendon Savings Bank and a former member of the Winchendon Country Club.

He leaves his wife of 38 years, the former June B. Helman; a son, Michael J. Moriarty of West Barnstable; another daughter, Mary Lou Moriarty of Gardner; a brother, David P. Moriarty of Rindge; four sisters, Lucy C. Moriarty of Winchendon, Mary E. Buskey of Gardner, Margaret A. Woovis of Leominster and Joanne C. Berlinghieri of Arlington; three grandchildren, and a step-grandson.

Services will be Friday, March 8, from FLETCHER-HEBERT FUNERAL HOME, 70 Pleasant St., Winchendon, at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce St. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Gardner. Visiting hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 6 to 9. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01709.
