Mariellen "Patty" Jefferies Elger, 80, of 9 Briarwood Lane died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided in Hinsdale for 20 years before moving to Pittsfield 20 years ago.
Born in North Adams on Aug. 19, 1922, daughter of Francis and Frances Sedgwick Carrington, she was orphaned at age 6 and was raised by her aunt Edna May Sedgwick in Schenectady, N.Y. She was a 1939 graduate of Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady, the Pratt Institute of Costume Design in Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Barbizon School of Fashion Modeling in New York City. She modeled furs for Russecks in Brooklyn.
She was employed by The Berkshire Eagle for 24 years, where she worked as a Hinsdale correspondent, as a tape winder on the telegraph desk and as an assistant social editor. She retired in 1978.
Mrs. Elger was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Pittsfield Senior Center and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and a charter member of the Berkshire Pioneers square dance club. She also volunteered at Berkshire Medical Center and the Central Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, and took part in the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life.
She served several terms as president of Beta Sigma Phi sorority during her 52-year membership and was secretary of the Greylock Federal Credit Union at GE. While in Hinsdale, she was chairwoman of the Republican Town Committee and a past president of the Mr. and Mrs. Club.
An avid skier, she belonged to the Greylock Ski Club in her youth. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, traveling and playing mah-jongg.
She and her husband, Rene A. Elger, were married Aug. 19, 1950, in Pittsfield.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Robert A. Elger of Cheshire and David F. Elger of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Leslie Lee "Penny" Gallagher of Pittsfield and M. Susan Force of Schenectady, and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce S. Jefferies, who died in 1988, and a daughter, Deborah Ann Elger, who died in 1951. She was predeceased by her brother, Jay Robert Carrington, with whom she was orphaned, in 1948, and by a granddaughter, Dori Ann Lowe.
The funeral will be Wednesday, March 6, at 10:30 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Mary Schreiber, senior missioner of St. Martin's Parish, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 5, from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Medical Center Cancer Research Unit in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
