Franklin R. Scace

Franklin R. Scace, 90, formerly of 1150 Barker Road, died Saturday at Springside of Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 14, 1912, son of Frank and Hanna Tierney Scace, he was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School. A licensed practical nurse, he was one of the first male nurses to graduate through the New York State Education Department in New York City.

In 1942, he opened a guest house and owned rental properties in Pittsfield for several years. He moved to California, where he was employed by Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels as a personal valet for many years, retiring in 1985. After his retirement, he returned to Pittsfield where he lived with his late brother, Robert Scace, on the Scace flower farm.

He enjoyed the theater, collecting art and growing specialty-cut flowers.

His wife, the former Louise Hamburger, whom he married in 1942, died in 1965.

He leaves a brother, Edward Scace of Roswell, Ga.; three sisters, Mildred Helperin of Stephentown, N.Y., Louise Filkins of Pittsfield and Mary Ketchum of Latham, N.Y. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, William and Warren Scace, and a sister, Ruth Carpenter.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 7 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, followed by a funeral service at 7. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
