Mary Coppolino

Mary Catherine Coppolino, 100, formerly of 106 Sherwood Drive, died Monday at Providence Care Center of Lenox.

Born in Reggio, Catanzaro, Italy, on June 9, 1901, daughter of Santo and Angela Macri Ranti, she came to the United States with her mother and brother to join her father, who had come here to work and make a home for his family.

She attended local schools. She had resided in an apartment on Hull Avenue until she was 97, when she went to live with her son for a year prior to moving to Providence Care Center.

Mrs. Coppolino was employed as a weaver at Elmvale Worsted and Berkshire Woolen mills, which made wool for soldiers' uniforms during World War I.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Rosary Society. In her earlier years, she was active in the work of church suppers and bazaars. She was a charter member of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center.

On her 100th birthday last year, she received a letter of congratulations from President George W. Bush.

Her husband, Carmello Coppolino, whom she married in 1924, died in 1954.

She leaves a son, Charles F. Coppolino of Pittsfield; two daughters, Rose Edward of Syracuse, N.Y., and Joanne Christiansen of Pittsfield; a sister, M. Theresa Talarico of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Anthony Coppolino, who died in infancy in 1927, and was predeceased by four brothers, Frank Ranti, Nicholas Ranti, Joseph Ranti and Peter Ranti, and a sister, Jennie Bilotta.

Funeral services for Mrs. Coppolino will be held Friday, Feb. 15, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Coppolino may be made to the Mount Carmel Church Memorial Fund in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield 01201.
