Horst T. Adler

Horst T. "Fritz" Adler, 80, of 492 Peck's Road died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Leignitz, Germany, on Feb. 2, 1922, son of Ewald A. and Hedwig Trauschke Adler, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1927 and graduated in 1942 from Pittsfield High School, where he was a star basketball player.
In January 1943, he joined the Army and served in the Pacific for 32 months. He was involved in the battles of Iwo Jima, Tinian, Truk, Saipan and Okinawa, and received the Bronze Star for heroism for saving a wounded comrade while under enemy fire.
He moved to Sacramento in 1950 and was employed by Spink Engineering before starting his own business as a roofer and painter. He returned to Pittsfield in 1998, after his retirement.
He enjoyed playing golf at both the Berkshire Hills and General Electric Athletic Association courses.
He leaves a son, Kurt Adler of Folsom, Calif.; a brother, Ronald E. Adler of Pittsfield, and eight grandchildren. A daughter, Lynette Dickerson, died in 1986. Predeceased by a brother, Hans J. Adler, and a sister, Ingeborg Browne, who died in January of this year.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 from WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, with the Rev. Peter D. Boehringer, pastor of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Adler's memory are suggested to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
