Wallace Johnson

Wallace M. Johnson, 90, of Baver Drive died Sunday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided for 10 weeks.

Born in Woodstock, Ill., on Oct. 24, 1911, son of Alfred E. and Flora Longanecker Johnson, he was a 1928 graduate of Woodstock Community High School. He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1932, and a master's degree from Iowa State University. He moved to Pittsfield in 1937.

Mr. Johnson was employed by GE in the design and development engineering department of the power transformer division for 39 years, retiring in 1973. He worked at the Pittsfield plant for 36 years and at the Schenectady, N.Y., plant for three years.

He was a member of South Congregational Church, the American Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers, and the GE Elfun Society. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross for more than 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He leaves his wife, the former Janet W. Weber, whom he married Sept. 24, 1944; two daughters, Carol E. Shoff of North Highlands, Calif., and Margaret A. Dion of Glastonbury, Conn.; two sisters, Doris Johnson of Hamden, Conn., and Mildred Thomas of Madison, Wis.; three grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 at South Congregational Church in Pittsfield, with the Rev. Joel F. Huntington, pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the Springside of Pittsfield Residents Activity Fund or to the Alzheimer's Association in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

My belated prayers for Wally, with whom i worked for 10 years at GE Pittsfield and learned real engineering. He was my teacher, mentor, and a friend, all three at the same time. May God bless his soul.
