Roderick L. Bates Sr., Navy retired, 76, of Route 20, Nassau, N.Y., formerly of Dalton, died yesterday at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.
Born in Dalton on April 17, 1925, he was the son of Thomas and Jane Lowe Bates.
Mr. Bates retired from the Navy in 1975 with the rank of chief petty officer, E8, after 21 years of service.
He lived in Brunswick, Maine, before moving to Nassau in 1977.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the National Rifle Association.
He leaves his wife, the former Helen Bailey; two sons, Roderick L. Bates Jr. of Schuylerville, N.Y., and Bruce H. Bates of New Lebanon, N.Y.; a daughter, Roxann J. Saunders of New Lebanon; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
