Helene Whitehead

Helene "Sandy" Whitehead, 76, of 235 Walker St. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided at Kimball Farms for two years.
Born in Newton on July 26, 1925, daughter of Alexander J. and Edith Haak Shannon, she attended schools there and was a 1942 graduate of Newton High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College in 1946.
She had resided in Nantucket for 30 years and was a member of the Siasconset Chapel, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. She also was a member of the garden club in Nantucket and was known for her ability to arrange flowers. She wrote and directed plays for the local children's theater and was active in the community theater.
She married John C. Whitehead; the marriage ended in divorce.
She leaves a son, J. Gregory Whitehead of Lenox; a daughter, Anne E. Whitehead of New York City, and two grandchildren.
A private family service will be conducted at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. A public memorial service will be held at Siasconset Chapel in Nantucket in the summer at a time to be announced. Those who desire may make donations in Mrs. Whitehead's memory to the 'Sconset Trust in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
