John G. Phillips

John G. Phillips, 82, of 64 East St. died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Carol Darby in Peru.

Born in Dalton on Feb. 25, 1919, son of John H. and Margaret M. Weinhofer Phillips, he graduated from the former Dalton High School. He moved to Winter Springs, Fla., in 1981, and returned to Dalton in November 2001.

Mr. Phillips was a decorated Army veteran of World War II. He served in Company G, 346th Infantry Regiment, in the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign. Mr. Phillips was employed with Crane & Co. for 45 years, retiring as an assistant superintendent in 1981.

A member of St. Agnes' Church, he was also a member of the Dalton VFW, the Dalton American Legion and the former Dalton Rod and Gun Club. While living in Florida, Mr. Phillips served as a sheriff, monitoring elections.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and golfing.

His wife, the former, Margaret O. Howlett, whom he married Dec. 27, 1937, died Jan. 22, 1988.

Besides his daughter, he leaves two other daughters, Barbara L. Suriner of Dalton and Judy A. Zaleski of Sorrento, Fla.; a brother, Michael Phillips of Colebrook, N.H.; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Following cremation, private services will be held by the family and his ashes will be scattered in the forest that he loved. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the Dalton Lions Club or the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
