Armand Demers

Armand N. Demers, 94, of 22 Cedar Drive, North Stonington, Conn., formerly of 53 Springside Ave., died Sunday at home.
Born in Winooski, Vt., on Dec. 25, 1907, son of Olivera and Cora Monet Demers, he attended schools there and moved to Pittsfield as a young man. He moved to North Stonington in 1993.
Mr. Demers was supervisor of landscaping for the Vanderbilts at their Elm Court estate in Lenox and at The Breakers estate in Newport, R.I. One of the last surviving employees of the family, he was interviewed during the early 1990s for a book on the Gilded Age. He was last employed as supervisor of maintenance for the former Berkshire County Savings Bank, now Berkshire Bank, retiring in 1994.
He was a communicant of St. Charles' Church.
His wife, the former Helen Leavy, whom he married June 7, 1929, died Nov. 23, 1994.
He leaves a daughter, Sheila M.D. McKenna of North Stonington; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. A great-granddaughter, Amanda Dawson, died Aug. 24, 1995. His son-in-law, Gerald T. McKenna, a North Stonington selectman, died in October 1993.
Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be tonight from 6 to 8. The funeral will be tomorrow at 9:15 from the funeral home, followed bya Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either Hospice of Connecticut or the American Leukemia Society, both in care of the funeral home.
