Edward J. Stanton

Edward J. Stanton, 88, of Colchester, Conn., formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday in Marlboro, Conn.

Born in West Stockbridge on July 20, 1913, son of William and Anna Noonan Stanton, he attended local schools and was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

He served in World War II as a civilian technical instructor for the U.S. armed forces in the Persian Gulf Command and in the China-Burma-India Air Service Command.

After the war, Mr. Stanton settled in East Hartford, Conn., where he was employed as a quality control supervisor for the Department of the Navy at Pratt & Whitney. He retired in 1977.

A communicant of St. Christopher's Church in East Hartford for many years, he most recently attended St. Andrew's Church in Colchester. He enjoyed working in the yard and cooking.

His wife, the former Mariellen Murphy, whom he married Oct. 14, 1944, died May 22, 1994.

He leaves two sons, William Stanton of Endwell, N.Y., and Michael Stanton of Colchester; a daughter, Barbara Purdell of Marlboro; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, William F. Stanton, and four sisters, Mary Clarkson, Anna Wise, and Helen and Clare Stanton.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday at noon at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, in care of the funeral home.
