James E. Groat

James E. Groat, 78, of 14 Winter St. died yesterday at home.
Born in Troy, N.Y., on Dec. 10, 1923, son of Willis and Madeline Nardin Groat, he was a resident of Pittsfield most of his life and attended local schools.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater.
He was employed as a union carpenter for various contractors and worked until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Pittsfield VFW Post 448 and the American Legion Post 68. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and was an avid reader.
He leaves his wife, the former Mildred Bence, whom he married May 3, 1951; three sons, Edward J. Groat, Jeffrey A. Groat and Shaun P. Groat, all of Pittsfield; two daughters, Janet L. Riddell and Judith A. Allen, both of Dalton; two brothers, Jack V. Groat of Peru and Clifford H. Groat of Adams; a sister, Joan Gates of Pittsfield, and seven grandchildren. Mr. Groat was predeceased by a brother, Willis H. Groat, and a sister, Inez Sciola.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 12, at 9:30 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor of First Congregational Church of Dalton, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the Dwyer Funeral Home tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.
