Nicholas J. Putzu

Nicholas John Putzu, 76, of 1611 Waterstone Lane, Charleston, S.C., formerly of Richmond, died Friday at Trident Regional Hospital in North Charleston, S.C. A longtime resident of 526 State Road, he moved South Carolina a month ago. Mr. Putzu was postmaster of the town of Richmond for 25 years, retiring in 1986.
Born in South Egremont on Oct. 31, 1925, son of Leonard and Jane Pellegrini Putzu, he attended schools in Richmond and in Pittsfield, and graduated from Pittsfield High School.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European theater. He was awarded a number of decorations, including a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
In earlier years, he had worked as a mason and as a carpenter for area contractors.
He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and doing carpentry work.
He leaves his wife, the former Janice Tanner, whom he married April 14, 1951; two sons, John N. Putzu of Charleston, S.C., and James Putzu of Richmond; two daughters, Jean P. Barto of Liverpool, N.Y., and Jeanette Rufo of Old Chatham, N.Y.; a brother, John L. Putzu of Tucson, Ariz., and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Putzu, and by a brother, Samuel Putzu, both of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 at Richmond Center Cemetery, with the Rev. William D. Furey officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Richmond Community Health Association in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, which is handling arrangements.
