Kevin J. Hirt, 10, of 33 Brookside Drive died Saturday morning at home after a long battle with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer he was diagnosed with in 1995.
Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 24, 1991, son of R. Paul Hirt Jr. and Lynn M. Campana, he was a fourth-grade student at Berkshire Country Day School in Stockbridge. He had resided in Birmingham, Mich., Vienna, W.Va., and Wilmington, Del., before returning to Pittsfield in 1996.
He enjoyed reading, including the Harry Potter books, the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" series and newspaper comics; listening to Harlan Coben mystery books on tape, and watching "The Simpsons." He also enjoyed Legos, movies, computer and video games, science, skiing, water sports and photography. He was a guest photographer for the school yearbook for two years.
Besides his parents, he leaves a sister, Mackenzie Hirt, at home; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Hirt of Wilmington, and his maternal grandparents, Richard and Nancy Campana of Bourne. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Rick and Jacqui Campana of Milford, Laurie Campana of Bourne, Stephen and Priscilla Campana of Maynard, Randy and Alberta Hirt of Cheshire, Conn., Pam Calvert-Hirt and Mark Calvert of Wilmington, Del., and his cousins, Justin, Cassandra, Nicholas, Johnathan, Morgan, Alexandra and Samuel.
There will be no calling hours. A Celebration of his Life will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 at Berkshire Country Day School, Route 183, Stockbridge. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Country Day School Library Fund or to the Catie Hoch Foundation, which directly funds neuroblastoma research and provides "fun" money to children undergoing treatment, in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is handling arrangements.
