Nicola DiNicola, 98, of 74 Dickinson Ave. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in San Buceto, province of Chieti, Italy, on June 5, 1903, son of Antonio and Maria DiPalma DiNicola, he attended schools in Italy and Pittsfield. He moved to Pittsfield in 1920.
He was a private with 9th Company, 22nd Infantry of the State Guard of Massachusetts, now the National Guard, from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
He was employed by GE for 48 years in the power transformer department and as group leader in the tank shop in building 14.
Mr. DiNicola was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564, the Italian Fraternal Society of New Britain, Conn., and the Pittsfield Adult Day Health Program on Bradford Street. He was the originator of the DiNicola Family Reunion, which he began in 1952.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and animals, and was a New York Yankees fan.
His wife, the former Alberina D'Orazio, whom he married Nov. 27, 1926, at St. Anthony's Church in Schenectady, N.Y., died Feb. 18, 1980.
He leaves three sons, Eugene DiNicola of Dalton, Nicholas DiNicola of South Glen Falls, N.Y., and Paul D. DiNicola of Hurley, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Ann Stockley of Pittsfield; nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen J.M. Adams, two brothers, Gennaro and Silvino DiNicola; and three sisters, Teresa D'Arcangelo, Caroline DelRosario and Carminella Chiacchiaretto.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary the Morning Star Church, celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 7. Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564 will meet at the funeral home Monday at 6 for a ritual service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary's Church Bell Restoration Fund in care of the funeral home.
