Winifred Green

Winifred "Winnie" Green, 89, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Ashuelot Street in Dalton, died Friday in New York City after a short illness.
Born in Pittsfield on May 31, 1912, daughter of James Connelly Jr. and Nora DePelteau Connelly, she grew up in Lanesboro and attended schools there through the eighth grade. She took the trolley to Pittsfield during her high school years and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1929. She graduated from Framingham Normal School in 1931 and later earned a master's degree from North Adams State College and another 72 hours of graduate credits at the university level.
Mrs. Green moved to St. Petersburg in 1997 from Dalton. She retired from education after devoting 55 years to the students and teachers of Berkshire County. Her last appointment was to the state Department of Education, where she was the first woman to hold the position of senior supervisor of elementary education.
Upon her retirement, she was given the Paul Revere Award, the first woman to receive such an honor, as well as a "pride in performance" citation given by then Gov. Michael S. Dukakis. She received other awards, including an International Reading Association commendation. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority and the founder of the Berkshire Chapter in the early 1940s. She also held several offices in the Berkshire chapter.
She began her career teaching Grades 5 through 8 in the Berkshire Village School at the age of 19. She was appointed as the first principal of Lanesboro Elementary School after 17 years of teaching, serving seven years. She then moved to the former Dalton Junior High School as vice principal and teacher for 10 years. She joined the Department of Education in 1967. She also taught on a college level.
She was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church in Dalton. In Florida, she was a member of Holy Cross Parish, where she was president of the Legion of Mary, a member and past officer in the Women's Club, and past president and treasurer of the Fordham Building Owner's Association.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Green.
She leaves a daughter, Catherine Marie Green of New York City.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes' Church, Dalton, at a time to be announced.
