In 1986, he moved to Pittsfield, where he participated in the local and New York business communities through various board memberships and other associations. He served as an advisory board member of Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. of Switzerland and of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System, and as a director of Berkshire Life Insurance Co. and Dreyfus Tax Exempt Money Market and Tax Exempt Bond Funds.

His memberships included the Pittsfield Country Club and the Tuxedo Club. He was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church.

He married the former Helen Drummond Stewart on Sept. 11, 1948, in Brooklyn.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert W. Rivel of Sao Paulo, Brazil; a daughter, Joan Rivel Pettrone of Averill Park, N.Y., and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ in Pittsfield on a date to be determined in January 2002. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Alzheimer's Fund in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
