Edward M. Moyer

Edward M. Moyer, 83, of Onset, formerly of 75 Wealthy Ave., died Friday at Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., on Jan. 29, 1918, son of Oliver and Cecilia Hunt Moyer, he attended schools there and moved to Pittsfield as a child. He was a 1936 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Michigan State College. He moved to Onset in 1989.

Mr. Moyer was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, serving as a second lieutenant in the 327th Bomb Squadron, 92nd Bombardment Group. As a crew member of a B-17, he was shot down over central Germany and interred as a prisoner of war. He was declared missing in action on April 4, 1945.

He was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Co. for many years before working in the power transformer division of General Electric. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Moyer was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Irish-American Club. He was also an active member of a veterans' group on Cape Cod.

His wife, the former Helen Glanfield, died Dec. 23, 1983.

He leaves a son, Robert O. Moyer of Onset and Newton; a daughter, Barbara A. Touhey of Pittsfield; a brother, Oliver S. Moyer of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. Another son, Edward M. Moyer Jr., died June 20, 1961.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 9:15 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newton Firefighters Relief Association, P.O. Box 60034, Newtonville, MA 02460. A memorial period for Mr. Moyer will be held in Onset at his son's home, 15 Upland Road, on Saturday, Dec. 8, beginning at 11.
