Francis C. Bashara

Francis Charles Bashara, 79, of 20 West Housatonic St. died Monday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility.

Born in Adams on April 24, 1922, son of Charles and Christine Mekedeci Bashara, he graduated from the former Adams High School.

He served in the Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class aboard the USS Core during World War II, from August 1942 to October 1945, and was awarded the European medal. He participated in the Naval Task Force in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender.

Mr. Bashara and his brothers, Fred and Charlie, operated the former Highway Diner on the Pittsfield-Lenox Road during the late 1950s. He then was employed by A.H. Rice Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1979.

He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the American Legion Post 68. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

His wife, the former Doris Y. Choulinard, whom he married Sept. 24, 1950, died April 8, 1996.

He leaves a son, Mark F. Bashara of Lanesboro; two brothers, Charles Bashara of Pittsfield and Philip Bashara of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Priscilla Ziter of Adams, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Frederick, and his sister, Mary Thomas.

Funeral services for Mr. Bashara will be held Thursday, Nov. 29, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
