William Mahanna

William E. Mahanna, 80, of Santa Barbara, Calif., formerly of Lenox, died Wednesday at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.
Born in Lenox on Nov. 22, 1920, son of John and Helen LaBrode Mahanna, he graduated from Lenox High School in 1938 and moved with his parents to New York City.
He began work in the retail trade at Peck & Peck and later worked at Macy's department store, both in New York.
At the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Mahanna joined the Navy and served on a minesweeper in the Pacific during the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa.
After the service, he resumed his career. In 1956, he moved to Santa Barbara, where he worked in retail management at Penninger's, at Robinson's and at Silverwoods. For many years, he participated in the Old Fiesta Days celebrations hosted by the downtown merchants.
Long an active participant at Holy Cross Church, he was an original member of its men's choir. Another pastime was maintaining a beautiful garden. Later in life, until his eyesight failed, he also enjoyed painting.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Helen Stanley; two sons, Paul Mahanna of Oxnard, Calif., and Peter Mahanna of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, Kathryn Krisenski of Pittsfield and Helen Wainess of Westlake Village, Calif., and two grandchildren. The youngest of four children, he was predeceased by a brother, Jack Mahanna.
The rosary was recited Monday evening, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. at Holy Cross Church. A funeral Mass for William E. Mahanna will be celebrated at noon today, Nov. 27, at Holy Cross Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by McDERMOTT-CROCKETT.
