Elizabeth Gaither

Elizabeth Walker Gaither, 81, of Kimball Farms, 235 Walker St., formerly of 97 Leroi Drive, Pittsfield, died Monday at home.
Born in Haverhill on July 21, 1920, daughter of Tom P. and Ruth Ann Pyle Walker, she was raised in Richmond and Norfolk, Va., and in El Paso and Beaumont, Texas. She attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1941. She also attended the Katherine Gibbs secretarial school in New York City.
A homemaker most of her life, Mrs. Gaither was employed as a legal secretary in Washington, D.C., while her husband was in the service. She moved to Pittsfield in 1946 and resided there until 1950. She returned to Pittsfield from 1956 through 1964, and again in 1970, until moving to Kimball Farms on Aug. 11, 2001.
She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a corporator of Berkshire Medical Center. She was a former trustee of the Pittsfield Visiting Nurses and a member of Pi Beta Phi.
She leaves her husband, William B. Gaither, whom she married April 1, 1943, at St. Alban's Church in Washington; a daughter, Frances Elizabeth Gaither Tucker of Syracuse, N.Y.; a son, Thomas William Gaither of Winchester; a sister, Mary Walker Gammill of Darien, Conn., and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William Brian Gaither, who died in 1950, and a sister, Ruth Ann Walker Brown of Chicago, who died in 1975.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. David J. DeSmith, interim rector, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Gaither's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield 01201.
