Debra de Rothschild

Debra Elisa de Rothschild, 42, of 130 East 63rd St., New York City, and Bridgehampton, N.Y., died Tuesday at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City after a long illness.

Born in Pittsfield on July 9, 1959, daughter of Leonard and Ileen Cohen of Pittsfield, she attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Miss Hall's School in 1977. She received her bachelor of arts degree in history cum laude from Brandeis University in 1981 and her juris doctorate from Emory University School of Law in 1986.

Mrs. de Rothschild worked as a fund-raiser for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York and as a criminal trial attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York. She later entered private practice, first in association with others and then in her own law firm, where she pioneered the defense of battered women and acted as counsel and trial attorney in many celebrated cases in New York and elsewhere.

She was a trustee of Miss Hall's School and a member of the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York.

Besides her parents of Pittsfield, she leaves her husband, Robert de Rothschild; a son, Jacob Alain de Rothschild, and a brother, Joel M. Cohen, all of New York.

Funeral services will take place at the Park Avenue Synagogue, 50 East 87th St., New York, N.Y., on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Debra Elisa de Rothschild Endowment Fund at Congregational Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield 01201.
