James D. Ward

James D. Ward, 82, of 29 B Highview Drive died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on March 8, 1919, son of John and Martha Polanski Ward, he was a 1936 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Dunkirk. He was enrolled in the General Electric Co. apprentice program from 1940 to 1948. He also graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in 1950.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel from the Army Reserves.
He was a drafting supervisor at GE for 40 years, retiring in 1980. His drafting experience included 11 years in detail, design, check and standards work on products of mechanical nature.
Mr. Ward was a communicant of St. Francis' Church, where he was the first principal of the CCD program and he also assisted in the design of the present St. Francis' Church.
He was a member of the Senior Center, Knights of Columbus, and former member of the Stanley Club. He was also a member of the GE Athletic Association, the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs, a committee member of the Boy Scouts, and was a former director of the CYC. He also taught swimming at the Pittsfield Boys' & Girls' Club.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary Ellen Bowles, whom he married Nov. 8, 1944, in St. Mary Magdalene Church in Omaha, Neb.; five sons, Dennis J. Ward of Springfield, Christopher P. Ward of Denver, Jeffrey W. Ward of Clifton Park, N.Y., Douglas M. Ward of Peterborough, N.H., and Lawrence J. Ward of Pittsfield; three daughters, Colleen J. Thumm of Englewood, Colo., Karen L. Ward of Maui, Hawaii, and Jennifer A. French of Pittsfield; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor. The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 16, from 2 to 4 at the DWYER FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis' Church in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.
