Chester Sumner

Chester C. Sumner, 80, of 41B Highview Drive died Saturday at Craneville Place in Dalton.
Born in New Bedford on Jan. 29, 1921, son of John and Sadye Stevenson Sumner, he was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School.
A World War II Army veteran, he completed more than 50 missions as a gunner on a B-17 in Africa and Italy and was awarded the Air Medal with nine clusters. Following the service, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and from the General Electric Apprentice Drafting Program.
Mr. Sumner was employed by GE for 32 years as a design draftsman in the distribution/ordnance division, retiring in 1981.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served on the diaconate and the 60-Plus Group, and a member of American Legion Post 68, the Berkshire Hills Country Club and the AARP.
He and his wife, the former Dorothy Lovejoy Shepard, would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary Jan. 12.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Bonnie J. Sumner of Pittsfield; a stepson, Ronald F. Shepard of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; two brothers, Benjamin Sumner of Burbank, Calif., and William Sumner of Lakeville, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield by the Rev. Robert Rennie, pastor of First Baptist Church of Pittsfield. Burial of his cremains will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Dale Lock Memorial Fund at First Baptist Church.
