John F. Carroll

John Francis Carroll, 81, of 65 Beverly St., a longtime civil engineer for the state, died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Hinsdale on Jan. 18, 1920, son of Francis J. and Anna Barry Carroll, he attended Hinsdale schools and was a 1937 graduate of the former Dalton High School. He had resided in Hinsdale for 26 years before moving to Dalton in 1949.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy as a warrant officer and received three battle stars for the invasions of the Wallace Chain Islands in the South Pacific, Safia in North Africa and Attu in the Aleutians. He also received a Presidential Unit Citation while serving aboard the USS Harris, APA 2.

Mr. Carroll was employed as a senior civil engineer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works at the District 1 Highway Maintenance Headquarters in Lenox for 36 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and served as an assessor for the town of Dalton for eight three-year terms, from 1963 to 1987. He was a member of Anthony J. DeAngelus Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Benjamin F. Sullivan American Legion Post 155. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

His wife, the former Elizabeth Fleming, whom he married March 24, 1945, at St. Agnes' Church, died July 4, 1995.

He leaves two sons, John B. Carroll of Houston and Timothy P. Carroll of Dalton; three daughters, Linda A. Carroll, Jane Fleming and Mary Carroll, all of Dalton; two sisters, Nancy A. Moynihan of Pittsfield and Mary M. Kirby of Dalton, and two grandchildren.

The funeral for Mr. Carroll will be tomorrow, Nov. 10, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, Dalton, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. John A. Koonz, pastor. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Dalton. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Carroll's memory may be made to the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
