Frances I. Smith, 81, of 22 Whittier Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 14, 1920, daughter of John F. and Frances McDermott Volin, she attended local schools and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1938. She moved to South Hadley in 1951 and returned to Pittsfield in 1963.
She trained as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and worked for a short time at GE and the former W.T. Grants store in Pittsfield before becoming a homemaker.
She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and crocheting, and making "care packages" for friends and relatives.
She and her husband, Paul F. Smith, were married June 13, 1942, in St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield.
Besides her husband of 59 years, she leaves a son, Peter M. Smith of Hubbardston; two daughters, Patricia A. VanBramer of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Suzanne Sweeney of Andover; a sister, Christine "Teeny" DiNicola of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be tomorrow, Saturday, at 8:15 a.m. from the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Teresa's Church, with the Rev. John Varley, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Medical Center Stroke Unit in care of the funeral home.
