Joseph D. Hashim Sr.

November 04, 2001

Joseph D. Hashim Sr., 96, of 139 West Housatonic St., owner and operator of Hashim's Market from 1929 to 1970 at the same address, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. He also was co-owner of the Berkshire Inn at 150 West Housatonic.

Born in Aley, Lebanon, on Feb. 6, 1905, son of David and Rebecca Haddad Hashim, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 6 and lived in Fall River, where he attended school.

Mr. Hashim came to Pittsfield in 1929 to join his brother Michael Hashim in opening the neighborhood grocery store. The store was sold in 1970 to Norman Crocker and became known as Norm's Variety.

In 1932, the Hashims bought the former Beech Grove Inn, razed it and built the Pittsfield City Motel. The 39-unit motel's name later was changed to the Berkshire Inn.

Mr. Hashim was a member of South Congregational Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A former professional boxer, he fought under the name Joe Grimm (an outstanding World War I Italian fighter). Mr. Hashim gained recognition as one of New England's top bantam and featherweights, winning 61 of 70 bouts, with one draw. His record included 24 consecutive knockout wins, and no opponent ever knocked him out.

His wife, the former Elizabeth Simon, whom he married April 28, 1938, died April 28, 1997.

He leaves a son, Dr. Joseph D. Hashim Jr. of Pittsfield; three daughters, Virginia Tobia and Mae Atter, both of Gardner, and Marion Muhlfeld of Elmsford, N.Y.; a brother, Dr. George Hashim of Pittsfield; a sister, Catherine Esper of Worcester; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. DERY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or to the Leukemia Society of America Inc., both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
