Joseph P. Amerio

Joseph Peter Amerio, 81, of 271 Barker Road died Sunday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 25, 1920, son of Peter M. and Lena Airoldi Amerio, he graduated from St. Joseph's High School and was a 1940 graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy, N.Y. He also attended Providence College in Providence, R.I., for 2 1/2 years. He played football throughout his college career.
He was employed as a testman in the power transformer department at General Electric Co. from 1964 to 1984.
Mr. Amerio was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, where he served as an usher. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs, and former president of the executive board of the International Union of Electrical Workers.
From 1944 until 1995, he officiated football games in Berkshire County and was honored for distinguished service by the Berkshire County Football Officials Association and received a Certificate of Merit in 1980 from the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Association and Hall of Fame.
A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed animals, gardening and models. In 1942, he obtained his pilot's license, which he used for recreational purposes. He collected books on baseball and World War II.
He leaves his wife, the former Mabel Estes, whom he married Sept. 4, 1944, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He also leaves twin sons, David J. Amerio of Newberry, Fla., and Peter M. Amerio of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.; a daughter, Nancy A. Rice of Hinsdale; a sister, Frances King of Pittsfield, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 2, at 10:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Church, with the Rev. Henry L. Dorsch, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, contributions in Mr. Amerio's memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME.
