Joseph Baldessarini

October 23, 2001

Joseph "Joe" Louis Baldessarini, 84, of 20 Dorchester Ave. died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.

Born in North Adams on June 23, 1917, son of John and Catherine Fachini Baldessarini, he attended schools there. He had resided in Pittsfield since 1940.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 until 1945. He was a recipient of the American Area, the Asiatic Pacific, the Philippine Liberation and the Seabee Insignia ribbons, and the Victory Medal.

He was employed by GE for 38 years, retiring as a technician in 1979.

A communicant of All Souls' Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, Mr. Baldessarini was active in church affairs and the founder of the Holy Name Society's polenta dinners. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the VFW Post 448 of Pittsfield, the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs, the Tyrolese Society of North Adams and a former member of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564 of Pittsfield.

He was talented in woodworking and furniture building, and enjoyed golfing, hunting, gardening, Italian music and traveling.

He leaves his wife, the former Elizabeth M. Conte, whom he married April 27, 1940, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church; two daughters, Lucy E. Baldessarini of Pittsfield and Ann B. Chambers of Westminster, Md.; a brother, Agostino "Gus" Baldessarini of North Adams; and a granddaughter. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Baldessarini Jr. in 1929, and Leonard Baldessarini in 1977, and his brother-in-law, U.S. Congressman Silvio O. Conte, in 1991.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at All Souls Church, celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, C.S.S., pastor. Burial will follow with full military rites at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, where Father Deeker will offer prayers of committal. Calling hours at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, will be Friday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the All Souls Church Memorial Fund in care of the Dery Funeral Home.
