Philip H. Smith

Philip H. Smith, 87, of 131 Appleton Ave. died Saturday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, where he had resided for three months.
Mr. Smith was employed in administration with the YMCA at various locations throughout the United States for 40 years, including as youth secretary in Warren, Ohio, and as member and public relations director in Hackensack, N.J. He came to the Pittsfield YMCA in 1968 and retired in 1979 as residence and building services director.
Born in Yachow (now Yaan), China, on Aug. 23, 1914, son of missionaries Frederick N. and Lucy Holmes Smith, he came to the United States at age 11 and was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in Newton. He also graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He did graduate work at Boston University, but his education was interrupted by World War II.
He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946 and was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
Mr. Smith was a member of South Congregational Church, where he was moderator and served with the diaconate, the Called to Care group and the Men's Forum. He was a delegate to the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ, of which he was a certified lay minister.
He was a member and past president of the board of directors of the Christian Center for 12 years and of the Pittsfield Area Council of Churches, and a member of the International Association of Retired Directors and the Pittsfield Kiwanis Club. He held offices with several professional YMCA associations.
A watercolor artist, his work was exhibited locally and had won several awards. He collected hippopotamuses and enjoyed bird watching.
He and his wife, the former Geraldine Difford, were married June 12, 1942, in Warren.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Sandie Smith of Great Barrington; two sons, Scott Smith of Pocatello, Idaho, and Denison Smith of Newington, Conn.; a sister, the Rev. Catherine Wood of Lyndonville, Vt., and twin granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 10 at South Congregational Church by the Rev. Joel F. Huntington, pastor. Burial will be Thursday at 2:30 in East Worcester (N.Y.) Cemetery. Calling hours at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME will be Wednesday from 4 to 6. If friends desire, donations are suggested to the South Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
