Robert B. Carlson

Robert Bertil Carlson, 81, of Sidney, Maine, formerly of Pittsfield and Lenox, died Friday at home.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 23, 1919, son of Frank and Martha Anderson Carlson, he graduated from Springfield Technical High School and the GE apprentice program. He had resided in Pittsfield and Lenox for 10 years while attending the apprentice program and then working at GE for six years in the 1940s. He later moved to Reading, then to Sydney and Fort Myers, Fla., after his retirement.
Mr. Carlson was employed by Austin-Hastings Co. until 1958. He founded and operated Carlson Machinery and, in 1977, Roma Stone Corp., retiring in 1987.
He was a past president of the PTA, Lions Club and Camp Fire Girls, and was a Sunday school teacher and moderator of First Baptist Church, all in Reading. He served as a Reading town meeting member and made the original Pleasant Street Little League scoreboard in 1950. While in Pittsfield, he was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Carlson enjoyed skiing and took many trips out West and to Europe. He also enjoyed boating on Lake Messalonskee in Maine after his retirement.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, the former Virginia Platt; three daughters, Svea Carlson of Stoneham and Fort Myers, Fla., Martha Cunningham of Reading and Krista Cullen of Bradford, N.H.; a son, Kurt Carlson of North Reading; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Dr. Robert B. Carlson Jr., died in 1981.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, at 11 at First Baptist Church, 45 Woburn St., Reading. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 9 at DOUGLASS, EDGERLEY AND BESSOM FUNERAL HOME, 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn Street), Reading. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial in Charles Lawn Cemetery, Reading. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice to assist the victims of the Sept. 11 World Trade Center tragedy.
