Hilda Haskins
September 17, 2001
Hilda Marie Allen Haskins, 95, of 308 Leyden Road, Greenfield, died Monday at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield, where she had resided since last November. She was the mother of Ruth Haskins Bass of Richmond.
Born in Westboro on July 7, 1906, one of 11 children of Halsey L. and Mabel Munson Allen, she was a graduate of Leominster High School. She also graduated from Framingham Teachers College in 1928 with a bachelor's degree in science and home economics. She was president of her senior class.
She taught home economics at Amherst Regional High School, where she met her husband, Ralph Warner Haskins, a native of Greenfield. They lived in Amherst until 1942 when they moved to Brockton. They moved to Westfield five years later and in 1952 moved to Greenfield.
While in Greenfield, Mrs. Haskins became an active member of Second Congregational Church, where she chaired many church supper committees, was past president of the Women's Association for a number of years, and was the first woman named a deacon of the church.
She was also a volunteer with the Red Cross of Franklin County Medical Center and was active in Girl Scout Councils in Brockton and Westfield.
In her younger years, she was an avid golfer. An expert seamstress and fine cook, she also pursued many other crafts, including knitting, tatting, chair caning, stenciling, furniture refinishing and quilting. She made quilts for her three children and nine grandchildren. Her hobbies included gardening and bird watching.
Following the death of her husband in 1992, Mrs. Haskins created a scholarship within the Fred Wells Scholarship Fund. For a number of years, the resulting Ralph and Hilda Haskins Scholarships have given $1,000 each to a boy and a girl in the graduating class at Greenfield High School and will continue to be given each year.
Her husband, whom she married June 25, 1932, died in 1992.
Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, George Allen Haskins of Rochester, N.Y.; another daughter, Janet Haskins Mandaville of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Alice Allen Everett of Oklahoma City and Jean Allen Wilson of Winchester, Va.; four brothers, H. Leonard Allen of Newtown, Pa., Dr. Raymond Allen of Southboro, Fred H. Allen of Richmond, Vt., and Charles M. Allen of Sterling; nine grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Private burial services will be held at Green River Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at Second Congregational Church on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Anita Chapman Scholarship Fund, the Community Health Association of Richmond and West Stockbridge, or the charity of choice, in care of Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 187 Franklin St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
