Lance Cpl. Roger W. Muchnick Jr., 23

LENOX, Mass. — Marine Lance Cpl. Roger W. Muchnick Jr., 23, formerly of Westport, Conn., and the grandson of Robert and Mary Ann Coakley of Lenox, died Monday night, March 18, 2013, during a training exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot, Nev.
Muchnick and six others were killed when a 60 mm mortar exploded during the live-fire exercise. Seven others were hurt.
Muchnick was the son of Kathleen Coakley of Jupiter, Fla., and Roger Muchnick Sr. of Ashville, N.C. He graduated in 2008 from Staples High School in Westport, where played on the lacrosse and football teams.
He entered the Marines in 2010 and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment.
He spent much time growing up with his grandparents, during which he would attend St. Ann's Church where the Coakley's are parishioners.
Besides his parents and maternal grandparents, he leaves a brother, William Muchnick; two sisters, Avery and Grace; his paternal grandparents, Jerome and Marilyn Muchnick of Philadelphia, and aunts, uncles and cousins.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Lance Cpl. Muchnick will be Friday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church in Lenox, conducted by Bishop Timothy McDonnell of the Diocese of Springfield, St. Ann's pastor, the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, and pastor emeritus, the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton, and the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle of Blessed John Paul II Parish in Adams.
Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery, next to his great uncle Air Force Lt. Cmdr. William F. Coakley, who was shot down over North Vietnam on Sept. 13, 1966, and is great uncle Joseph Coakley.
