Samuel Katz

Samuel Katz, 80, of 19 Darlene Ave., died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on July 9, 1921, son of Max and Esther Cutler Katz, he attended local schools and was a 1941 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 149th Engineering Battalion in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. A participant in the D-Day Invasion in Normandy on June 6, 1944, he was discharged as a staff sergeant.
Mr. Katz was the co-owner of S&J Variety from 1947 until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed wintering in Boca Raton, Fla.
He was a member of Temple Anshe Amunim and its executive board, the Louis Green Post of the Jewish American War Veterans, and also served as a volunteer at Tanglewood for the past 14 years.
He and his wife, the former Sylvia Weiss, were married Sept. 12, 1948, in Hartford, Conn.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Allen G. Katz of Sudbury; a daughter, Lynn Katz Danzig of Beachwood, Ohio; two brothers, Jason and Henry Katz, both of Pittsfield, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Temple Anshe Amunim with Rabbi Dennis Ross, spiritual leader of the congregation, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Temple Anshe Amunim at 20 Broad St., or to the American Cancer Society. DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
